Gary Baseman

Gary Baseman is known for his broad art practice that includes award-winning illustration and animation (Emmy and BAFTA-award winning Teacher's Pet), fine art, performance, toy design and fashion. Baseman coined the term "Pervasive Art" in the early 2000s and states, "Art can be appropriate in almost any medium, from print to TV to film to paintings to consumer products, as long as you stay true to your aesthetic and have a strong sense of meaning." Baseman continues to blur boundaries of art, expanding into the depths of the digital world.

Memento Moa

Memento Moa is a new series of original art created by Gary Baseman for an exhibition in New Zealand. Exploring themes of migration, memory, and mortality, Baseman creates a mythical land of hybrid creatures. Playing off the phrase "memento mori" which expresses the inevitability of death, Baseman reimagines Aotearoa New Zealand as a land of rebirth and harmony, bringing back the giant moa from extinction to symbolize those loved and now lost. Through iconic characters set in fantastical landscapes, Memento Moa considers family, history, and the idea of home with the artist's long standing desire to "celebrate the beauty of the bittersweetness of life."

‍A landscape of constant motion with figures both imagined and real, Wings of Desire pays homage to those who have long inspired Baseman. Icons from the worlds of fine art, music, TV, film, and animation are mixed with the artist's own original characters (Toby, Venison, Veritas, Buster, Manny Moa), as well as family members like his favorite cousin, his grandfather, and Blackie the Cat. All hybridized as moa birds. Baseman uses the extinct moa to symbolize those loved and lost.

Mourning Glory
Lively and harmonious creatures and spirits blend into a lush jungle that includes the kakapu, kiwi, and weka — birds native to New Zealand. At the center, the soul of a woman dressed in Victorian mourning clothes embraces the moa, a reference to New Zealand’s complicated history and heritage. Forget-Me-Not flowers grow from the moa, and a single hopeful morning glory flower blooms in the distant field.

Subverting the idea of taxidermied animal trophies, Baseman places the moa bird on a tree as a symbol of those loved and lost. A WildGirl and black cat pay respects to this extinct creature, breathing life into a memory of something gone, but not forgotten. Baseman created this image for Memento Moa, an exhibition that explores the themes of migration, memory, and mortality.
