USPS Stamp Art

‍The Commemorative Stamp Program issues stamps that honor events, persons, or themes. The first stamps were issued by the Post Office Department in 1893. To date, more than three thousand commemorative stamps have been issued that celebrate America’s national history — from animals to plants, people to places, and anniversaries to events. The Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee was established in 1957 and its members use their collective expertise in history, science, technology, art, education, sports, and other areas of public interest, to consider and then recommend stamp subjects to the Postmaster General for final approval.

Women Support the War Effort

Originally part of the 1999 “Celebrate the Century” series, the “Women Support the War Effort” stamp celebrates women from the 1940s. While millions of men joined the armed forces in World War II, millions of women took over their jobs and made up more than 1/3 of the workforce. Many others served as volunteers to help in any way possible.
