Every month, Zoë from VeVe takes us on a quick tour through the wonderful world of comics — spotlighting the covers that stopped her mid-scroll, the stories that lived rent-free in her head, and the hot takes she’s absolutely willing to stand by. Spoiler-free and unapologetically opinionated, this series is your monthly dose of “what you should be reading (and why).”
Okay so I got carried away with the Comic Takes for our first article, but honestly? The covers have been doing the absolute most lately, and I am simply not strong enough to ignore a good colour palette and some unhinged comic energy. Here are my faves from this month!
Jen Bartel has been a longstanding fave artist of mine since before she was dropping epic sneaker collabs with Puma and DC. Since those glory days, she's been rightfully distant in the comics landscape (Jen, if you're reading this, we miss you and your gorgeous creations gracing our social feeds!), so seeing her art featuring none other than Mother herself, Scarlet Witch, was a delight. Also: purple.
There's just something about Alex Ross art that jumps out to slap you across the cheeks and make you look, damnit! And I'm LOOKING at this one. This might fluff some feathers but I genuinely think the Common variant cover of this comic is the best of the lot. Don't @ me! Magenta looks good on Strange.
Nogi San is just so damn good. The fact that an artist can make this much of an impact with three colours and a dream speaks for itself. On my radar since her Marvel Rivals: Ignite #1 cover variant, it's hard to believe Nogi has only recently begun her comic cover journey.
Maybe it's because I've been playing a lot of Animal Crossing: New Horizons lately, but I'm starting to feel like an Art History buff. Colour me surprised when I saw we had not one but TWO epic art pieces as wraparound covers for the finale of the vampiric VeVe-sellout series CUL-DE-SAC. #cultured! Now if only Redd could not sell me fake art as I try to complete my island museum...
We can't not talk about the Marvel/DC: Deadpool/Batman oneshot, which sold out in the time it took for me to get 8 hours of uninterrupted Zzz's. Deadly srs Bruce Wayne crosses swords with chaos gremlin incarnate Wade Wilson. What could possibly go wrong? :))))
Shout out to my friend Sam for putting me on to Wiccan before Wandavision and Agatha All Along dropped on Disney+ and became overnight hits. In an eerily similar get-up to what Joe Locke sported portraying Billy Maximoff toward the end of AAA, Wiccan is forced to travel down, down, the witches road to save his grievously injured "pal" Hulkling (and they were roommates!) in Wiccan: Witches' Road.
Fellow emos, this one's for us. I've been on a huge gothic kick since... well, infancy, but especially since September last year when I visited the Tower of London, saw some big aaa ravens, and the bookish genre buzz was seasonally appropriate spooky reads. Who says horror has to be reserved for October? Not me! And not ABLAZE, who have kindly recruited the artist behind the gorgeous animated short of The Fall Of The House Of Usher — Raul Garcia — to adapt the Edgar Allan Poe classic into a beauuutiful Tim-Burton's-Corpse Bride-adjacent graphic novel.
That’s my month in a nutshell: dramatic men in capes, witches doing witchy things, and pretending I’m cultured while Redd scams me for the tenth time. If you read any of these, tell me your fave — and if you didn’t… consider this your sign to do so!
Don’t forget to catch VeVe’s weekly comic releases and to collect the amazing variants we have available. Catch you all next month!
