Heroes Be Damned sold out on VeVe Comics. The creator-owned series from 247 Comics brought a darker, manga-inspired take on superheroes to the platform, and collectors responded with overwhelming demand.

From Kickstarter to Global Stage

Heroes Be Damned began life on Kickstarter, drawing attention with its darker superhero satire and manga-inspired style. Writer and artist Vince Sunico had been working on the project for years before teaming up with 247 Comics.

“This is a project I’ve been working on for a long time, and the fact that it’s finally out now, I’m really excited. I just hope people enjoy it,” Vince said.

Marvel veteran Terry Kavanagh joined after meeting 247 Comics CEO Carl Choi at a convention. “When he showed me this, the first three issues were already completed, and I was blown away. With the exception of a few people like John Byrne, Alan Davis, and Walt Simonson, it’s a risky proposition to write and draw your own work. That was not the case here at all.”

The risk paid off. Kickstarter gave the series its start, and the VeVe release of Heroes be Damned #1 transformed that momentum into another global digital comics sell-out.

Why Creator-Owned Digital Comics Belong on VeVe

At its heart, Heroes Be Damned is a creator-owned title. That independence has always been the spark behind its story and its appeal.

“In traditional publishing, there are so many good stories, but only so many get picked, and not always the best ones,” said Aaron, one of the VeVe hosts. “Digital-first publishing is a great opportunity because there’s less risk. And you can distribute globally without printing or shipping.”

Terry echoed the importance of ownership. “From my years at Marvel, once creator-owned became a possibility, I suspected many people started holding back their best creations. They didn’t want to hand them over to a corporation. They wanted to save their best ideas for themselves, so they could own and control them.”

On VeVe, those ideas can now thrive. Independent voices are reaching collectors everywhere through digital comics.

A Story That Pulls No Punches

So what awaits readers who open Heroes Be Damned? Vince describes it this way: “If you like The Boys, Spawn, or even Berserk, you’ll get touches of that here, definitely with a superhero theme and a bit of satire. The character basically mows down everything. But it’s not just about fighting or violence, it’s about understanding why he’s doing it. Readers will get to see his journey.”

Across six issues, archetypes that fans instantly recognize are introduced, twisted, and redefined. Terry explained: “What’s fascinating is how Vince flips good guys and bad guys. Who starts out good may not stay good. And as the story goes on, you understand more of the villain’s motivations.”

Visually, the series leans into black and white with splashes of red. “It represents absolutes that people expect, good versus evil, but the story lives in the gray area between,” Terry said.

The VeVe Drop: Scarcity Meets Spectacle

Collectors quickly learned why this VeVe drop was so special. The release featured five variant covers across 666 total editions. The Common variant of Heroes be Damned #1 had 264 copies, while the coveted Secret Rare variants dropped to only 29.

Among them was a stunning Bill Sienkiewicz cover. Corey noted, during the interview, “He’s done amazing exclusives for VeVe, like Return of the Jedi #1. He did the original cover 40 years ago, and then created an exclusive variant for VeVe’s 40th anniversary release. That’s the kind of thing you’ll only see here.”

Seeing it for the first time, Vince said: “This is amazing. First time I’ve seen it. I love it.”

Why Collectors Are Choosing Digital Comics

Skeptics often wonder if digital can really rival print. Terry has lived both sides. “I’ve been a collector my whole life, and it was all about paper. But I eventually switched to digital. Some comics actually look better digitally. The colors were vibrant and bright, like how I felt about comics when I was younger.”

VeVe has seen the same trend. Collectors often start with digital comics, then chase the physical editions too. It’s not either-or, it’s a partnership that strengthens both.

Community, Creativity, and What’s Next

The VeVe community brought its own creativity to the drop. California Comics, the first metaverse comic shop in the world, even put a $247 bounty on the 247th mint edition.

For the creators, passion has been the driving force. Vince explained: “Honestly, I’ve always done it for myself. Sure, you want people to like your work, but even without payment, I’d still be doing it.”

Terry agreed. “Everyone is passionate. It reminds me of my days at Marvel, people worked more than required because we loved what we were doing.”

With more issues to come, the journey of Heroes Be Damned in digital comics is only beginning.

The Future of Collecting Is Here

The sell-out of Heroes Be Damned on VeVe is more proof that digital comics are no longer an experiment, they are the future. Independent projects can rise alongside household names, and collectors can own scarce, creator-driven stories that might never have reached them otherwise.
